Revisiting a Mei-Yu Front Associated with Heavy Rainfall over Taiwan during 6–7 June 2003

چکیده

During 6–7 June 2003, a Mei-Yu jet/front system over Southern China is characterized by appreciable horizontal temperature contrast below the 850 hPa level (>8 K), where cold, dry, postfrontal northeasterlies converge with warm, moist southwesterly flow, and above 400–hPa (>18 K) associated an upper-level front. The frontal baroclinic zone tilts northward slope of ~1/100. passage midlatitude trough, advances southeastward. thermally direct circulation across subsynoptic low-level jet (SLLJ)/Mei-Yu front system, coupled dynamic forcing aloft on equatorial side entrance region (SULJ), provides favorable environment for development cyclone China. A marine boundary layer (MBLJ) develops between deepening West Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH). MBLJ transports from northern South Sea (NSCS) to All three jets (SULJ, SLLJ, MBLJ) interact together during positive feedback effects latent heat release. On 7 as arrives near Taiwan area, moist, unstable air decelerates it approaches Central Mountain Range (CMR). orographically lifted CMR enhances vertical motion already present zone. widespread heavy rainfall develops, maximum more than 350 mm/day, extending southwestern coast windward slopes CMR.

The Influence of an SST Front on a Heavy Rainfall Event over Coastal Taiwan during TiMREX

A long-lived heavy precipitation area was observed along the southwest coast of Taiwan from 13 to 18 June 2008 during the Terrain-Influenced Monsoon Rainfall Experiment (TiMREX). Rainfall amounts exceeded 500mm along portions of the coast, and the coastal plains experienced severe flooding. The precipitation systems were influenced by blocking effects, as the southerly moist monsoon flow imping...

The Diurnal Cycle of Winds, Rain, and Clouds over Taiwan during the Mei-Yu, Summer, and Autumn Rainfall Regimes

The diurnal variations in surface winds, rain, and clouds over Taiwan are presented for three rainfall regimes: the mei-yu (16 May–15 June), summer (16 July–31 August), and autumn (16 September–15 October). Though the magnitude of diurnal island divergence and convergence is similar under each regime, the diurnal variations of rain and clouds vary considerably between the regimes. These differe...

13a.5 Application of Doppler Radar Data Assimilation on the Retrieval of a Mei-yu Front within the Taiwan Strait Associated with a Heavy Rain Event

With the incorporation of Doppler radar radial velocity by MM5/3DVAR system, a Mei-yu frontal system related to a coming heavy rain episode over southwestern Taiwan was retrieved within the Taiwan Strait on 6 June 2003. Significant frontal wind-shift (the prefrontal southwesterlies/the postfrontal northeasterlies) was reproduced over ocean, which was not captured by the NCEP reanalysis and the ...

Diurnal Variation of Regional Circulation and Precipitation During Mei-Yu Season over Taiwan and Surrounding Area

During Mei-Yu season of Taiwan (May-June), fronts often pass through Taiwan region and interact with the large-scale circulation and land-sea breezes which would also affect the diurnal cycle of wind field and precipitation. This study divides the Mei-Yu season of 2008-2012 into pre-Mei-Yu (5/15-5/31), mid-Mei-Yu (6/1-6/15), post-Mei-Yu (6/166/30) in order to discuss the seasonal changes of the...

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa

This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...
